Animal microchipping and EU passports

Microchipping and passports

Pet passports and microchips. If you are planning to travel abroad with your pet, to feel safe and, if necessary, facilitate its identification – animals can always get lost – visit our Clinic, where licensed veterinarians will issue a passport and microchip for your pet.

The correct sequence of steps when traveling abroad with your pet.

  1. Conducting a clinical examination.
  2. Microchipping the animal.
  3. Completing the necessary ectoparasite and endoparasite prevention and rabies vaccinations.
  4. Issuing a passport.

It is a good idea to microchip your pets, even if you do not obtain a passport for them.

Microchipping is the most permanent way to identify animals. A veterinarian uses a specially prepared needle to implant a device the size of a grain of rice under the animal’s skin, near the neck. The implantation is very quick and painless. Each microchip contains a unique 15-digit identification number that can be read with a special reader. Immediately after implantation, each owner should register their pet’s microchip number in one of the international databases (e.g., Safe Animal or Identyfikacja.pl). If your pet goes missing, this increases the chance of immediate identification and a quicker return home.

TRAVELING ABROAD WITH A DOG – WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT HAVING A PASSPORT?

Depending on the country and situation, the relevant authorities may return the animal to the country of origin or departure, quarantine it until the requirements are met, or even euthanize it in extreme cases, all at the caregiver’s cost.
In addition, in order to travel with an animal, it is necessary to have a valid vaccination against rabies entered in the passport. This is required by all countries. If this is the first dose of vaccination entered in the passport, 21 days must elapse before it becomes valid.

Do you need a passport for your dog in the European Union?

Within the EU, you can travel with your cat, dog, or ferret, provided that your pet has a European pet passport.
